"Big Box" Stores
"Big Box" stores handle some of the same brands that the independent retailer handles. Customers have the perception that the "Big Box" will be less money than the independent. That is wrong. The independent usually sells at MSRP just like the "Big Box". The advantage the independent has is that our product is set up by a trained tech (not a guy that worked in the paint department two days ago), we have a parts department that knows what part you need and a service department that can handle any of your maintenance issues. Some box stores send your equipment by truck to St. Louis to be repaired. Most of the time they can repair it without having to send it back a second time. So next time you are ready to buy a piece of equipment, decide where you can get the best service.
Direct or Distributor?
Power equipment manufactures have two ways of getting their product to the end user. They can sell it directly to the retailer or they can sell it to a distributor who will then sell it to the retailer. The advantage of direct selling is that you don't have a middle man taking 15% to 18% of the sale. Gravely is manufactured in Brillion, Wisconsin and then shipped direct to the dealer. When comparing Gravely to a brand that goes through a distributor, you can save hundreds of dollars. Honda and Kawasaki power equipment are the other lines we buy direct. Before you buy, find out how you brand is sold.
